XENACANTIFORMES
Xenacanthiforms
Extinct relatives of sharks and rays, they lived mainly in freshwater. Their bodies were long and similar to those of eels. They swam meandering close to the bottom of rivers and lakes, looking for small prey such as aquatic invertebrates and fish. They displayed large spines above their heads, which were probably used for defense against larger predators. The last xenacanthiforms disappeared from Earth around 200 million years ago.
