Apareceram no planeta por volta de 247 milhões de anos atrás: alguns dos fósseis mais antigos que conhecemos foram encontrados em território brasileiro. No passado estiveram distribuídos por praticamente todos os continentes, mas hoje o grupo sobrevive através dos tuataras, que só são encontrados na Nova Zelândia. Embora pareçam superficialmente lagartos, diferem na estrutura dentária, sensorial e até mesmo reprodutiva.
 

They appeared on the planet around 247 million years ago: some of the oldest fossils we know were found in Brazilian territory. In the past they were distributed across practically all continents, but today the group survives through the tuataras, which are only found in New Zealand. Although they superficially resemble lizards, they differ in dental, sensory and even reproductive structure.
