Formam o grupo mais antigo de peixes ósseos do planeta, tendo aparecido por volta de 425 milhões de anos atrás. Destacam-se dos demais por causa de suas nadadeiras carnosas e ossificadas. Essa característica, entre outras, indica que  foram os ancestrais evolutivos dos vertebrados terrestres - que incluem a nossa espécie. No passado sua diversidade foi grande, mas hoje apenas alguns poucos ainda sobrevivem – divididas entre actinístios e dipnóicos.
 

They form the oldest group of bony fish on the planet, having appeared around 425 million years ago. They stand out from the rest because of their fleshy and ossified fins. This characteristic, among others, indicates that these fish were the evolutionary ancestors of land vertebrates - which include our species. In the past, they were high diverse, but today only a few still survive – divided between actinistians and dipnoans.
