Surgiram no planeta por volta de 250 milhões de anos atrás, e hoje sobrevivem representados por lagartos e serpentes, além dos misteriosos tuataras. A forma como a maioria deles se locomove, combinando ondulações do corpo e membros que articulam para os lados, é uma das características mais marcantes destes animais. Diferem de outros saurópsidos também na estrutura dos dentes - se fixam diretamente aos ossos maxilares através de uma substância “cimentante”. Algumas espécies desenvolveram armas químicas na forma de toxinas, que produzem a partir de glândulas especiais presentes normalmente na cabeça, e que podem ser inoculadas por meio de mordida, através de dentes especializados. Este é um recurso que pode ser usado de forma defensiva contra predadores, ou em alguns casos para imobilizar presas.
 

They appeared on the planet around 250 million years ago, and today they survive represented by lizards, snakes and tuataras. The way most of them move - combining body undulations and limbs that move sideways - is one of the most striking characteristics of these animals. They also differ from other sauropsids in the structure of their teeth - they are attached directly to the jaw bones through a “cementing” substance. Some species have developed chemical weapons like toxins, which they produce from special glands normally present in the head, and which can be inoculated by biting, through specialized teeth. This is a resource that can be used defensively against predators, or to immobilize prey in some cases.
